The historical trajectory of Singapore is a profound study of transformation, resilience, and strategic adaptation. Situated at the crossroads of maritime Southeast Asia, the island's narrative extends far beyond its establishment as a British trading settlement in 1819. This course, "The History of Singapore: Colonialism, Independence, and Nation-Building," offers a comprehensive examination of the pivotal epochs that have shaped the modern city-state. From its early connections to the Johor-Riau Sultanate and regional trading networks to the profound social and economic shifts under British Crown Colony rule, the curriculum explores how global commerce, mass migration, and colonial administration forged a diverse but segmented society. By analyzing these foundational developments, learners will understand the complex interplay of economic opportunity and social inequality that characterized colonial Singapore and sowed the early seeds of political awakening.

Building upon this historical framework, the course critically examines the rupture of the Japanese Occupation between 1942 and 1945, a period that fundamentally altered local attitudes toward colonial legitimacy and catalyzed postwar nationalism. As the narrative progresses through the turbulent era of decolonization, learners will investigate the achievement of self-government, the strategic but short-lived merger with Malaysia, and the ultimate realization of an independent republic in 1965. The subsequent modules delve into the monumental challenges of early nation-building, highlighting the state's rigorous approaches to export-oriented industrialization, public housing, bilingual education, and multiracial social cohesion. Finally, the curriculum contextualizes Singapore's contemporary identity by evaluating its proactive role in regional developments, particularly the formation and evolution of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), demonstrating how historical vulnerabilities have been transformed into enduring diplomatic and economic resilience.
