Element 2.2.1: At all times, reasonable precautions and adequate supervision ensure children are protected from harm and hazard.

ACTIVE SUPERVISION Educators promote children’s learning and development by creating physical and social environments that have a positive impact. It is necessary for educators to be alert and aware of risks and hazards and the potential for accidents and injury, not only in their immediate location but also throughout the service. To provide effective supervision, educators need to be conscious of the physical environment and be attuned to the needs of individual children
Active Supervision Strategies 
1)  Proactive Preparation
a)  Use what you know about your student’s ability, demeanor, needs, and their self-regulation skills to anticipate their actions. 
b)  Plan for these things by prepping the space to address individual needs 
c)  Praise children often 
d)  Provide positive re-direction as needed. 

2)  Set Up the Environment
a)  Divide the environment up into positioning zones.
b)  Scan the area for blind spots
c)  Reposition or remove objects that impede on your line of sight
d)  Ensure the area is clutter-free and safe 

3)  Positioning of Staff 
a)  Ensure you can see every child all the time
b)  Utilize the zoning method to ensure each teacher is stationed in a zone to see and hear the children 
c)  Never turn your back on the children 

4)  Scan and Count 
a)  Continuously scan the area 
b)  Count children throughout the day during transitions
c)  Record head count on a dry erase board near the entrances.
d)  Change the head count board whenever a child enters or leaves the room for ANY reason

a)  Be attentive and quickly identify signs of potential danger
b)  Alarm or add chimes/bells to doors alert staff when a door has been opened
c)  Pay attention to conversations that may potentially escalate
